Horrified by the murder of Matthew Shepard, photographer Andreas Schmidt set his lenses on rural Gay America, attempting to understand how this tragedy could happen.
After eighteen months of preparation and fundraising, Andreas hit the road in February of 1999, leaving his job and home behind. This nine-month, 30,000-mile road trip took him to all fifty states. Andreas surveyed and documented community support and issues affecting gay men in all parts of the United States.
You are invited to view the first ever display of Andreas’ images from that journey in 1999.
