• VPD Collaborates with Community Leaders In Officer Selection Process

    VALLEJO - The Vallejo Police Department (VPD) is pleased to announce its ongoing collaboration with the City’s Human Resources Department to advance VPD recruitment initiatives. Under the direction of Chief of Police Shawny Williams, VPD and the City have enlisted community leaders throughout Vallejo to participate in the selection of VPD officers.
     
    The inclusion of community leaders in the selection process aligns with VPD’s Exceptional Service Model and 21st Century Policing principles to create an environment of transparency, engagement and trust within the community. The new process also comes as part of the OIR Group’s third-party assessment of VPD, which highlights the phase one priority of “strengthening the range and responsiveness of the workforce” by placing greater emphasis on “racial, gender and ethnic diversity in recruiting efforts”. 
     
    “My vision is to see Vallejo become one of the safest cities in the Bay Area and creating this key layer of inclusion is a major step toward fulfilling that goal,” Chief Williams stated. “Vallejo is considered to be one of the most ethnically diverse cities in the nation, so having our Department be a reflection of that will assist us in meeting the unique needs of our community.”
     
    Other internal initiatives within the Police Department include creating a rotational program for new hires and sworn personnel as a means to cultivate a structured and well-rounded approach to policing. “We want to create an environment internally within the Police Department where we can tell a recruit that if you come here, we produce leaders, and you’re going to be a leader,” Chief Williams stated.
     
    How Can the Community Get Involved?
    (1) VPD and the Human Resources Department are in the process of establishing a formal application process for community leaders to submit their interest in serving on a hiring board. (2) All community members in the City of Vallejo may provide their feedback on the characteristics they want to see reflected in our officers by completing our Police Officer Selection Survey.

    If you do not have access to a smartphone or computer, the Vallejo branch of the Solano County Library (JFK Library) has computers available for public use. As of June 15, 2020, the JFK Library is now accepting requests for computer use by appointment only. Community members may make an appointment to use the library computers by calling 1-866-572-7587.
